Such a small word, causing so many bigemotions on Saturday 23May when people in theRepublic of Ireland votedin favour of same-sex marriage.I admit I was more than a little bit scared ofthe outcome. I almost couldn’t believe it wheninitial reports suggested the results would bepositive, but didn’t dare get too excited in caseit might ‘jinx’ things somehow.Personally, I don’t believe an issue of equalrights should have been handed over to areferendum. I was terrified it could set an awfulprecedent – and it may still do so in countrieswhere gay people have such a long way to goon the road to equality that every human beingdeserves. This is a victory, and a historic oneat that, but public opinion isn’t so tolerantelsewhere. You don’t even have to go that far– there are no plans to bring a similar law toallow us to marry in Northern Ireland.Do I want every other country in the worldto follow in the footsteps of the Republicof Ireland? Hell yes! I’ve said before that Idon’t feel marriage is for me, personally, butit’s my right to be able to do so. I recentlyattended the wedding of my best friend Barry,to his partner Robin, and I can honestly sayit was one of the best days of my life. The factthat they’re so happy gives me a joy I neverthought I’d experience in my lifetime. And noone should be denied that.Positive outcomes aside, rights aren’tsupposed to be voted on, they’re supposed to beours anyway.■Darren Scott@darren_scott[52]first06GT Fitty12Måns Zelmerlöw14Rufus Wainwright16Michelle Visage22Sweetie, Darling?----------[88]entertainment80Hozier85The Overtones86Ciara88Nile Rodgers94Mo’Nique102Gay comics108Tech----------news24Gay MPs26Katie Hopkins: Friend or foe?28Heroes: The Leather Boys32Benjamin Cohen----------real life111Readers’ Lives112Porn Again117Mikey Walsh119Michael Alig120The Guylinerfeatures34Rixton46Big Brother52Tituss Burgess58BD Wong----------123Positive Luke125PJ Brennan126Fit with Chris Jones1292 Lovely Gays130Home Style132Edd Kimberstyle63Nautical but nice68François Sagat76Grooming----------133Gastro Gays134Modern Family----------[102]travel136Amsterdam138Pride guide----------EISSUTNEXSALEONJULY8SUBSCRIBEAND SAVE30%ON THECOVER PRICEFOR DETAILSSEEPAGE 21gaytimes.co.uk15
