SERIOUS BUYER...
Every year I travel hundreds of miles throughout the UK, Europe and Scandinavia,
buying stocks, collections and accumulations. And I’ve been doing this since 1970.
WHAT DO I BUY?
I buy virtually anything in stamps and covers, from specialised one country
collections to general lots and accumulations, from better quality single items to
complete dealers’ stocks. If it’s philatelic, I’m interested.

WHY SELL TO ME?
PHILATELIC AUCTIONEERS & VALUERS
www.warwickandwarwick.com
For
FOUR
very good reasons:
ACCURATE VALUATIONS
- I have over thirty years’ full-time experience as a major
buyer in the stamp trade, and I buy from all the main UK & Continental auction houses.
I make accurate, eficient valuations based on the very latest market values.
FAIR VALUATIONS
- I work on a high turnover with low proit margins which means
I must buy - and I pay the top market price to make sure I do. I cannot afford to waste
my time and yours by making unrealistic offers which will not stand comparison.
IMMEDIATE PAYMENT
- All my offers are backed by immediate payment.
We agree a price and you get paid there and then. It’s that simple.
HOME VISITS
- I travel extensively, which means that I can easily arrange to view
bulky, valuable collections in your own home - at no extra cost to you.
And inally
... I buy most of my material from auction, usually at well below my “top
price’’. If those people had sold directly to me they would have been paid more,
paid immediately and would not have paid any commission or gone to any other
expense.
Think about it
- and then give me a ring.

G.S.M. August 2013
Dear Reader
We move from one moment in world history to another, as we
investigate the role stamps and covers have played in shaping
the Soviet Union’s grand airship construction plans, instigated
as part of its ‘First Five-Year Plan’. Gwyn Williams explains how
an innocent looking pair of stamps from Tannu Tuva led him
on a fascinating voyage of philatelic discovery behind the ‘Iron
Curtain’. In his article, Gwyn reveals the USSR’s (over) ambitious
plans to produce a leet of airships that would be the envy of the
world—plans that would be funded, in part, by the sale of special
commemorative stamps and postal stationery. Discover the whole
story of the USSR’s airship dream and the philatelic legacy it left
behind in this month’s special article found on page 64.
Would these formidable aircraft have ever made their way into
the skies over Moscow if it wasn’t for stamps? Maybe. Maybe not.
However, it’s the way stamps have inluenced history and how
history has inluenced stamps over the past 173 years that, for me,
makes this hobby so fascinating. If you want to share your views on
what makes stamp collecting so appealing to you, let us know at
the usual address.
For me, one of the great things about this hobby is the links it has
with some of the key moments in world history—links that most
people don’t even realise exist. For example: everyone knows the
story of the sinking of the
Titanic
, but how many people outside
of the hobby know that the world’s most infamous ocean liner
was actually a Royal Mail ship, or that the crew of Apollo 11
made the world’s longest ever postal delivery when they carried
commemorative covers from Earth to the Moon and back? Not
many I should imagine.
A similar historic event, which also has an infamous link with
the post, is the so-called Great Train Robbery. Even though it has
been immortalised and sensationalised by the media for the past
50 years, how many people know it was a Travelling Post Ofice
(the ‘Down Special TPO’ from Glasgow to London to be precise),
and in particular its precious cargo of High Value Packets, that was
the target of the multi-million pound robbery? I also wonder how
many people, including those of us involved in the hobby, know
that the Post Ofice carried out its own in-depth investigations into
the attack. I know I certainly did not—not until I read this month’s
fascinating article on the subject.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of the robbery, Douglas
Muir, Senior Curator, Philately of the British Postal Museum &
Archive, reopens the Post Ofice’s oficial Investigation Branch
records to reveal more details surrounding one of Britain’s most
famous crimes—including some never before seen photographic
evidence linked to the oficial enquires. As well as offering a
unique Post Ofice perspective to the robbery, Douglas also
reveals more about the history of the HVP service, a service which
attracted so much unwanted attention on that fateful day in 1963.
