Change, that is. And, while it canhappen in so many ways, one thing about change isconsistent: the way it impactsour lives will bring us out theother side as different people. One of life’s changes is, undoubtedly, motherhood – a word that still makesme feel like a deer in headlightswhen I ponder on the possibility of ithappening to me. The fact that I feelrising panic when I think of how itwould obliterate my monthly handbag-and-shoe savings fund does indicatethat it’s a privilege perhaps not meantfor me. For our managing editor, Taryn, however, her ‘mothering’ of our team –like a patient and perseverant henslowly but surely ushering her ducksinto a row – makes it plain to seemotherhood is a role she was destinedfor. And so, when she daintily tiptoedinto my office one day to tell me BabyDas Neves was on the way, I criedtwice. Once for joyand once for self-pityat the thought oflosing her for somemonths. As I write this,I’ve just blubbed intomy Kleenex again, having heard that, earlier in the day,Taryn and her husband,Verge, welcomed theirson into the world.Taryn and Verge, ifit’s any consolation, these were tearsof pure happiness!Besides, I have to keep my stock ofself-pitying tears in reserve for a ‘D Day’coming up soon: no, not deadline, butdeparture – our brilliant food editor,Thulisa, will soon be flying theF&HEcoop to return to a career in food-product development. As I’m sureyou’ll agree, Thulisa’s contributions tothe magazine have greatly enrichedit and I’m only letting her spread herwings on the condition that she willoccasionally swoop back to ‘feather’our pages again with her wonderfulfood-styling work. With all this talk of celebratingmotherhood and changing course,it’s high time we served up a feast! And, boy, have we got more than a fewdelights in this issue – the utterly lovelylavender dishes (page 80), irresistibleways with trout (page 22) and heavenlyhybrid bakes (page 54) are just some ofthe treats in store for you.On that note, I wish youa Happy Mother’s Dayand here’s to excitingnew chapters!Photographs by Dylan SwartWhen in search of a feel-good read reCookery Schcently, I founoolby New ZdThe Food oealand-base(Recipe for Lf Loved author Nicife,The Italiaky Pellegrinon Weddingaprevious novndWhen in Rels).
